Small business owners’ lack of marketing experience

leads to many failures

MINNEAPOLIS, MN-The majority of small business failures can be attributed to a lack of marketing or sales experience in the owner’s background, says marketing author Jay Lipe. And he cites a recent study to back up that claim.

A recent survey by the National Federation of Independent Businesses researched small business owners’ pre-ownership experience, and found that over 50% of them launched their businesses without any background in marketing or sales.

“Almost nobody starts a business because they love marketing,” says Jay Lipe, small business marketing expert and the author of The Marketing Toolkit for Growing Businesses. “But without it you won’t have a business for very long.”

The problem, Lipe says, is that today’s market-driven economy demands small businesses possess more than just a technical proficiency. In Lipe’s estimation, it’s not enough for a small business to be expert at just throwing rugs or drawing up contracts. Without at least a basic talent in marketing to compliment that proficiency, the company won’t experience long-term growth.

“Marketing is a discipline just like accounting or engineering” says Lipe. “The problem is too many small business owners get the religion of marketing right at the point that their raft is heading over the falls. By then it’s too late. My goal is to get small business owners to practice marketing much further upstream.”

Lipe wrote his book so that small business owners, without any background in marketing, could get quickly up to speed on the discipline. In the book, he challenges small business owners to address these vexing marketing questions:

q Why do we need a marketing plan?

q Which target audience should we focus on? Where can we find more of them?

q Which metrics should we use to track our marketing efforts?

q What are the best ways to brand our company?

q How can we continue to market our company during slow times?

The book, subtitled Tips, Techniques and Tools to Improve Your Marketing, draws upon Lipe’s

20 years of experience helping 100’s of growing companies, and was written “so that small business leaders know what to do to market their company,” says Lipe. “After finishing my book, I want the reader to feel like they just got a master’s degree in small business marketing.”

The book retails for $19.95 and is available at major bookstores, www.amazon.com and directly from the author at www.emergemarketing.com . More information on the book can be found at www.chammersonpress.com
